Historical Note: German born American-Danish experimental physicist (Cosmic Rays, Elementary Particles). Born in Poland; the family moved to Germany when Peters was 2 year old. He left for USA 1934 as a fugitive from Nazi-Germany. Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley, 1942, under Oppenheimer. Field of research: cosmic rays. Places of employment: Berkeley 1942-45 (Manhattan Project); Assistant Prof., University of Rochester, NY, 1946-51; Prof. exptl. phys., Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay, India, 1951-58; Prof., UITF/NBI, Copenhagen, 1959-66; Director, Danish Space Research Institute, Lyngby, Copenhagen, 1966-78.
