Historical Note: Mackintosh was educated at the University of Cambridge, England, but spent his career as a mature scientist in Denmark, where he introduced modern solid state physics as a fully-fledged field of research. As a researcher he made important contributions, particularly to the understanding of the electrical and magnetic properties of the rare earths. He was also instrumental in promoting European cooperation in physics, and as director of the Danish Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Risø, from 1971 to 1976, he was a major force in Danish science policy and a prolific contributor to the public debate about nuclear power.
